The Port of Gdynia area is limited and no possibility of expansion out to sea would be a barrier to development.

The aim of the construction of the Outer Port is to improve the competitive position of the Port of Gdynia by enabling the handling of ocean-going container ships with Baltimax parameters, i.e. with a length of up to 430 metres (in the longer term up to 490 metres), a width of up to 60 metres (in the longer term up to around 70 metres) and a draught of up to 16 metres.

As a result, the Port of Gdynia will gain a strong position in significant cargo segments on a national, Baltic and European scale.

Why is this the only possible development route? There is no possibility of expanding the Port of Gdynia's port infrastructure landward as it is surrounded by residential and commercial districts of Gdynia.

  1. Opportunities to acquire new land around the port basins of the Port of Gdynia are running out
  2. Competitive seaports in the Baltic and North Sea region are growing rapidly; potentials need to be aligned
  3. The assumptions of the "Strategy for the Development of the Port of Gdynia until 2027" provide for an increase in the area of the port in the inland areas of the Bay of Gdansk
